The Greencast – March 4, 2019 – Khalida Jarrar

On the show this week, I’m covering the release of Palestinian legislator Khalida Jarrar, held for nearly two years by the Israeli government without charge or trial. Also, the UN Commission on Human Rights released a report last week on Israeli snipers knowingly targeting emergency medical workers, disabled people and children at the 2018 Palestinian Right of Return protest. Finally, several items covering the continued lead up to war in Venezuela.

Ben Norton has been doing some amazing reporting on the ground in Venezuela, and he’s really worth following on Twitter.

I went to a market this morning in Miranda state, Venezuela and I still couldn’t find the “humanitarian crisis” the US gov and corporate media keep talking about.

And this is in a mostly pro-opposition neighborhood. Government-subsidized markets are even cheaper and more popular.

When we say that the Democrats wouldn’t be any better…

When we point out that the Democrats really wouldn’t be any better on progressive issues than Republicans, this is what we’re talking about.

While Hillary Clinton publicly welcomed improved relations with Venezuela as secretary of state, she privately ridiculed the country and continued to support destabilization efforts, revealed her emails leaked by WikiLeaks.

Where was the outrage?

People: Trump’s choice of Eliott Abrams to be his administration’s point man on Venezuela isn’t a “blunder.”

This will not come back around to bite him on the ass.

Where was the mass outrage when Abrams praised US-trained murder squads and the massacre of subsistence farmers and peasants in El Salvador in 1982?

Right, nowhere. Americans don’t give two shits about the global south unless we can demonize them for coming here and “committing crime” and “selling drugs.” Never mind the facts.

Where was the mass outrage when Bush pardoned Abrams for lying to Congress over his role in Iran-Contra?

Precisely nowhere.

Where was the mass outrage when, as a key architect of the Iraq war, every. single. lie. Abrams came up with to justify that war was proven false?

Nowhere at all.

Picking a convicted-but-pardoned war criminal was hardly a blunder.

It plays right into Americans’ racism and apathy, and it’ll probably work out just fine for the Trump administration.

The US is orchestrating a coup in Venezuela

Santa Clara Green Party:

The US is orchestrating a coup in Venezuela to remove the twice democratically elected socialist President Nicolas Maduro from power and seize control of the country’s oil resources (the largest in the world) and gold reserves.

The US and its allies (among them Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Spain, the UK, Sweden, Columbia, Brazil, Argentina, and Chile) have recognized Juan Guaido, the President of the National Assembly and leader of the opposition, as the legitimate acting president of Venezuela.

They imposed additional economical sanctions on Venezuela while freezing the country’s assets abroad in an effort to further destabilize the socialist regime and topple Maduro. At the same time, the EU, Canada and some Latin countries are calling for new elections and pushing the Military – that is still supporting President Maduro – to cooperate with the opposition to allow the passage of humanitarian aid.

Maduro is resisting, calling this offer and the sanctions an excuse to start an invasion. Meanwhile, the US is mobilizing its armed forces for a possible military intervention.

This scenario, now supported by the EU, follows a pattern of other coups the US has orchestrated in Latin America throughout the 20th century to overthrow democratically elected left-wing regimes and take over their natural resources: Guatemala in 1954, Brazil in 1964, Chile in 1973, Argentina in 1976, and many more.

The question of whether or not Maduro is good or bad is an intentional misdirection. The point is this: the US has no right to be staging a coup in Latin America, period, let alone for the purpose of stealing Venezuelan resources under the guise of “fostering democracy.”
